Construction worker putting the asphalt roofing (shingles) with nail gun on a large commercial apartment building development

If you’re looking to begin a DIY roofing project, chances are you’ve already got your roof tiles and tools sorted. However, something that is very important, yet sometimes forgotten about, is roof safety. Staying safe on the roof is vital to any construction project. Not only are you protecting yourself, you are also ensuring that others around you are safe from harm. It will also help your project progress a lot faster, as you won’t have to pause to tend to injuries or anything worse.

Heat and Rain

Choosing the right day and time to work on your roof is something that’s simple, yet effective. The weather can play a major factor in how safe you are on the roof. Extreme heat can, not only result in hot tiles, but uncomfortable working conditions. Without proper self-care, like hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and water, you may become burnt or dehydrated. Working in the rain should be avoided entirely. Wet surfaces could cause you to slip and fall, resulting in injuries or death.

Have the Right Equipment

Without proper equipment, you might as well throw safety out the door. Make a checklist to ensure you have everything you need for your project:

Personal Protection

Get yourself suited up before you carry out your project. Personal protection can manage the risks of tool-related injuries and falls. This includes a hard helmet, gloves, glasses, and safety footwear.

Ladder

In order to safely access and get off the roof, you’ll need the appropriate extension ladder. It needs to be able to reach your roof, support you weight and easy to access when you get off. Your ladder should extend one metre higher than your gutter so it won’t fall and leave you stuck. Climb the ladder with both feet and at least one hand if you’re holding a rope or tools. Make sure you have someone holding the ladder for extra stability.

Rope and Safety Harness

Ropes and safety harnesses don’t just protect you from falls; they also help you easily access work areas. Ropes should be industry standard so they don’t wear out and break. Tie the tope to something secure like a tree or a structural part of your house. You should also use lanyards to secure tools. Harnesses need to be able to fit you securely, so ask your supplier how to adjust them properly. It also needs to be positioned properly to allow you to connect your rope. Your harness system also needs suitable anchorage points, which can be used with proper training.

On the Roof

When you’re on the roof, you need to make sure that it’s safe to access and walk across. Extra measures need to be taken if your roof is fragile. This includes rotting material, glass, corroded metal sheets, polycarbonate and roofing sheets made with asbestos. Using crawl boards and temporary walkways and platforms can help access your roof more easily and prevent you from falling through.
